Watauga High School choruses achieve highest MPA ratings

Article Published: Mar. 27 | Modified: Mar. 27

The Watauga High School Honors Chorus and Advanced Women’s Chorus each received ratings of “Superior” at the North Carolina State Music Performance Adjudication, held at Wake Forest University March 11, marking the seventh year in a row that both choirs have received the highest possible rating at this event.

“Our choirs were told that they were a ‘breath of fresh air’ by one of the festival coordinators,” director Lisa Combs said, “and our soloists were amazing. One thing I love about working with high school students is that they will always give you their best when it counts, and that was certainly the case at this event.”

The strong showings were made all the more impressive by the fact that both choirs missed many rehearsals due to the frequent inclement weather of recent months, Combs said. To date, schools have been closed 17 days for inclement weather during the current school year, with most of those closings concentrated in the two months prior to the MPA.

Combs is the director for both choirs and is in her 26th year as a music educator in Watauga County. She has taught at Watauga High School for 13 years.

For their performance at MPA, the Honors Chorus sang “In Remembrance” by Jeffery Ames and an Appalachian song, entitled “Bright Morning Stars,” by Shawn Kirchner. The Advanced Women’s Chorus sang “Things that Never Die” by Lee Dangler and “Schlof Main Kind” by Allan Naplan.
Local music lovers will have the opportunity to hear these selections, as well as others, when the choirs perform in the Spring Concert at Watauga High School on May 20.
