Watauga County Schools superintendent Marty Hemric was officially hired Tuesday to be superintendent of Wilkes County Schools.

Hemric, who has led Watauga County Schools since 2008, will take the new job Jan. 1, 2012.

Hemric is a Wilkes County native and served as assistant superintendent there prior to joining Watauga County Schools.

He will start a four-year contract on July 1, 2012, but will be employed on an interim basis starting Jan. 1, 2012. The early start will allow him to cover the period from current superintendent Steve Laws’ retirement to the start of the new fiscal year. His annual salary will be $159,500.

Hemric’s wife, Ramona, is currently principal of Moravian Falls Elementary School in Wilkes County.
