Sugar anticipates Wednesday opening
Sugar Mountain Resort has fired up its snow guns in anticipation of an Oct. 31 opening date.
According to its website, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort plans to
open on Halloween — this Wednesday, Oct. 31 — for skiing and snowboarding.
The opening will
mark the resort's earliest in its 43-year history. Prior to this week, the earliest opening was Nov.
5 in 1976, the Sugar Mountain website states.
According to resort officials, "The mega
storm, Sandy, which continues to pound the East Coast, is ushering in winter in the North Carolina
mountains. Two inches of natural snow have fallen already, with eight inches plus expected. Snow
continues to fall while temperatures are forecasted to remain in the low to mid-20s through
Wednesday."
Snowmaking began Sunday evening and continues around the clock, the resort said.
Skiers and snowboarders can expect a natural and manmade powder surface covering the Upper
and Lower Flying Mile slopes on Wednesday, and the Summit No. 1 Lift will be in operation to the
Three-Quarter’s station, resort officials said.
