What’s the best way to win the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce’s
annual Grown-Up Spelling Bee?
As chamber president and event emcee Dan Meyer would say, “Just bee yourself.”
On Tuesday at Watauga High School, the chamber put the “fun” in “fundraising” with its 13th annual adult spelling bee, in which teams from area businesses and organizations compete to win the respect of their peers — along with an assortment of prizes.
Chetola Resort’s Word Nerds, featuring Marcia Greene, Ruthie Nathan, Allison West and Kara Miller, took first, defeating Samaritan’s Purse’s Disaster Bee-lief Crew of Jennie Miller, Laurie Barbour, Susan Barlow and Debbie Henderson in a wham-bang contest over “onomatopoeia.”
The biggest winner, however, was Western Youth Network, the local child and family advocacy organization, which was the recipient of $1,000 raised through bee proceeds.
