Rollin' for Owen to benefit area family
Mark your calendars now for a family-fun event to honor a very special young man and his family.
Rollin' for Owen, a motorcycle ride, car show and barbecue lunch to benefit Owen Miller and his family, will be held on Saturday, June 26, at the old Watauga High School in Boone.
The full day of fun in the sun is scheduled as a community effort to show continued support for a young man and his family who have experienced a very difficult year.
Last December, the High Country rallied around young Owen Miller, who at 9 years of age, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor on the day after Christmas.
Owen became a household word in and around the area as he underwent successful surgery to remove the tumor on Jan. 6. He began a long course of treatment, which included six weeks of radiation.
He is currently receiving intense chemotherapy, which will continue through the summer.
But Miller is not your typical "patient."
While thousands of friends - through personal visits, calls, e-mails and Facebook entries - have expressed support and encouragement to Miller and his family through their journey, it's been Owen, himself, who has remained the strongest, perhaps, through it all.
"His humor and positive attitude have been an inspiration to everyone he meets, and he is still smiling," a family acquaintance said.
His fourth-grade teacher, Corey Freeman, commented in an earlier interview, that Miller was the glue that held her class together - an exceptionally bright 9-year-old who enjoys school, loves everyone, enjoys soccer and building Legos. He loves to be outside skiing, hiking, kayaking and camping with his parents, Chris and Janet, and little sister Lena.
Registration for the two- to three-hour, 100-mile ride will begin at 8:30 a.m. and depart around 10 a.m. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m.
More than $4,000 in door prizes will be given out through the day. Entertainment will be provided by James Meadows & The Country Mile Drifters.
