Red Bull brings the butter competition
Qualifications for The Red Bull Butter Cup are happening this year at Appalachian Ski Mountain Saturday, Feb. 6
In its second year, the Red Bull Butter Cup is pushing its East Coast snowboarding and skiing competition to the West, and taking the best butter boarders with it. The competitor who stands above the rest at the end of the day will take their talent to the Red Bull Butter Cup in Sierra-at-Tahoe and vie for the 2010 Butter Cup in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
Amateur and professionals alike are invited to compete in the judged competition on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock. Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m., and the competition begins at 1 p.m.
Only tricks that include the "butter" ingredient will be scored by the judges. "Buttering" denotes a trick that spreads the snowboard along rails, trees, benches, roofs and anything else Red Bull can come up with to be slathered.
Set in jam format, competitors will go head to head to top each other. Tricks will be judged regarding their style, ingenuity, creativity and execution.
All contestants are invited, but riders who are 18 years old or younger will need to have a parent or guardian present and have them sign a waiver for the event. If the parent or guardian cannot attend, riders can obtain a waiver at http://www.appterrainpark.com, which must be signed and notarized prior to the competition.
Other prizes include a second place trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway for NASCAR's Memorial Day race, where winners will watch from the Red Bull Energy Station. Third place will win a gift card to Recess Board Shop in Boone.
The winner of the skiers division will get a free trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway for NASCAR's Memorial Day race.
