A piece of Horn in the West history came crashing to the ground on Monday as the Powderhorn Theatre was demolished.

Part of the Daniel Boone Park campus owned by the town of Boone, Powderhorn Theatre was in use from 1964 to 2008, according to Southern Appalachian Historical Association Vice Chairman Steve Canipe.

Located east of the "Horn in the West" outdoor amphitheater and parking lot, Powderhorn was a black box-style theater featuring seating for 75 people. The theater was originally designed to provide "Horn in the West" cast members a stage to expand their skills in other dramatic areas.

"The Powderhorn brought revenue to SAHA for decades, not only through the secondary shows this 'black box' held, but also through party rentals by fraternities and other organizations," said SAHA Chairwoman Michelle Ligon. "It was a sad thing to see it torn down."

SAHA leases the amphitheater and adjacent Hickory Ridge Living History Museum from the town for use in its historical and cultural programs.

In recent years, the town determined the Powderhorn Theatre building was structurally unsound, barring interior or exterior use of the building as a matter of public safety. The Boone Town Council approved a contract to demolish the building, as well as the Watauga Humane Society's old shelter near the waste water treatment plant, last summer.
