Four local dogs were barking up the right tree.

The winners of The Mountain Times Cutest Pet Photo Contest paid MT staffers a visit last Friday, posing for photos and plenty of petting.

First place went to Emma, whose owner, Mimi Osborne, adopted her from the Watauga Humane Society.

"Emma dedicates her first-place award to Lynn Northup, the former shelter manager of the Humane Society," Osborne said. "Lynn rescued Emma over eight years ago from a rather scary and dangerous street life, thus making this all possible."

Osborne said that many folks will remember Emma as "The New Market Centre Dog" and "The Lowes Foods Dog," known then as Hazel.

Second place went to Morton, a Chinese pug puppy whose owners, Sherry and Bill Walker, fittingly live in Hound Ears.

Third place went to the Sophie and Mandy, a dynamic duo of poodles owned by Karen and Jerry Wilson of Boone.

The contest was sponsored by The Pet Place, which furnished the first-, second- and third-place winners with $125, $50 and $25 gift certificates, respectively.

The contest raised more than $400 for the Watauga Humane Society.
