The N.C. Department of Transportation will soon install a four-way stop at the intersection of Deck Hill, Flat Top and Payne Branch roads between Boone and Blowing Rock.
The new signs will be installed the week of Aug. 12 if weather permits, said Randy Steskal, transportation technician for the NCDOT.
Deck Hill Road and Flat Top Road currently have stop signs, while Payne Branch Road does not. But the higher traffic volumes are on Deck Hill and Flat Top, Steskal wrote in a news release Tuesday.
The new system was initiated after citizen concerns about the sight distance available for drivers crossing Payne Branch Road, according to the DOT.
“Stop Ahead” warning signs will be installed on both approaches of Payne Branch Road to help alert drivers to the traffic pattern changes.
At an all-way stop, the first vehicle to reach the intersection should move forward first. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver to the right should proceed first.
