OASIS seeks volunteers for crisis line, offers training

OASIS Inc. (Opposing Abuse with Service, Information and Shelter) is a private, non-profit volunteer organization that has been serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Watauga County since 1978.

The organization is seeking community members to become crisis line volunteers.

According to OASIS, “The crisis line plays a critical role in our mission to create a community free from domestic violence and sexual assault. We need compassionate and caring men and women who want to be part of the work in creating a safer community.”

Volunteers will have the opportunity to answer crisis calls from their homes once or twice a month. Volunteers are scheduled for evening hours and weekends only. No prior experience is necessary.

All candidates must complete an 18-hour training program over the course of a weekend in order to be prepared to answer OASIS crisis calls. The training will take place March 28 to 30.

In addition to its 24-hour crisis line, the number for which is (828) 262-5035, OASIS provides free and confidential shelter for victims and their children, short-term crisis intervention, advocacy and support through medical and legal processes, information and referral, support groups for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, educational programs for schools, community organizations and professional groups.
