November employment figures released


The state’s seasonally adjusted November unemployment rate was 7.4 percent, decreasing 0.6 of a percentage point from October’s revised rate of 8.0 percent, according to the N.C. Department of Commerce.

The national rate decreased to 7.0 percent from October’s 7.3 percent.

North Carolina’s November 2013 unemployment rate was two percentage points lower than a year ago. The number of people employed increased 20,037 over the month to 4,314,502 and increased 6,082 over the year. The number of people unemployed decreased 28,138 over the month to 343,611 and declined 101,091 over the year.

Seasonally adjusted total nonfarm industry employment, as gathered through the monthly establishment survey, decreased 6,500 to 4,084,100 in November. The major industry with the largest over-the-month increase was trade, transportation and utilities at 2,600, followed by professional and business services, 2,000; construction, 1,600; and leisure and hospitality services, 300. Major industries to experience decreases were education and health services, 4,100; manufacturing, 3,300; financial activities, 2,500; government, 1,500; other services, 1,000; and information, 600. Mining and logging employment remained flat over the month.

Since November 2012, total nonfarm jobs gained 56,800, with the total private sector growing by 59,700 and gov-ernment declining by 2,900. The largest over-the-year increase of major industries was in professional and business services at 25,700, followed by trade, transportation and utilities, 15,400; education and health services, 9,800; leisure and hospitality services, 7,700; information, 5,200; and manufacturing, 200.

Major industries to experience decreases over the year were government, 2,900; construction, 2,500; financial activities, 900; other services, 800; and min-ing and logging, 100.

The next unemployment update is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, when the county unemployment rates for November 2013 will be released.
