New Year's: Where to toast to 2011

Appalachian Ski Mountain
Skate your way into the New Year at Appalachian Ski Mountain's (940 Ski Mountain Road) New Year's Extravaganza. Expect fireworks, torchlight skiing and moonlight ice skating from 10 p.m. to midnight. Visit http://www.appskimtn.com for more information.
Barra and Sorrento's
Sorrento's and Barra at the Village Shops of Banner Elk (142 Main St. E.) are ringing in the New Year with fine dining. Sorrento's Bistro will be open all day from noon to 11 p.m. with its regular menu. Things heat up at Barra with a two-person dinner package (including salad, prime rib, vegetable, dessert, champagne toast, a DJ and party favors), starting at 7 p.m. for $100. The Bistro French-Italian Cuisine (115 New Market Center) invites you to celebrate New Year's Eve with a classy meal. The cost is $55 per person (with a wine pairing for an additional $25) for the four-course dinner. A highlight (according to the management) is a pomegranate salad (shaved fennel, shallots, fresh herbs and spring mix tossed in a blood orange vinaigrette topped with ricotta cheese and pomegranate seeds) and a beef tenderloin filet. New Year's will be loud at Boone Saloon (489 W. King St.), but in a good way, as local pop rockers Naked Gods join Yardwork and Invisible Hand in bringing in the New Year. Expect a $7 cover.
Buckeye Recreation Center
Can't stay awake? Then the Bash at Buckeye Recreation Center (26 Grassy Gap Creek Road) in Beech Mountain is for you. Strum in the New Year with gritty Americana beats as Porch Dog Revival returns to Canyons (8960 U.S. 321) New Year's Eve for a free show starting at 9 p.m.
Casa Rustica (1348 N.C. 105 S.) recommends reservations for its dinner service (starting at 5 p.m.). Music with local diva Melissa Reaves starts at 9 p.m. and is free with the purchase of dinner (or $10). Expect a complimentary champagne toast. Char (179 S. Howard St.) rings in the New Year with a four-course (not including the sorbet) dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. for $45 a head. At 10:30 p.m. things heat up as D.J. Jamie Overcash hits the turntable. The champagne toast is free, but there's a $5 cover in advance and a $7 cover at the door.
New Year's at Crestwood Lounge (3236 Shulls Mill Road) starts at 8 p.m. with a night of dancing and dining. A four-course meal and midnight champagne toast will be provided. Frasers (108 S. Jefferson Ave., West Jefferson) lets you choose from four different culinary combinations, like a salmon filet stuffed with jumbo lump crab meat and bistro steak medallions with grilled shrimp. Jackalope's View at Archers Mountain Inn (2489 Beech Mountain Parkway, Banner Elk) is hosting a special four-course dinner with prices ranging from $40 to $70, depending on the selection. The Mast Farm Inn
The Mast Farm Inn (2543 Broadstone Road, Banner Elk) serves a special four-course meal for $37.50. In honor of New Year's tradition, they're starting things off with a black-eyed pea and collard soup. Expect prime rib served with sauce bearnaise, finger length potatoes and creamed spinach. The Meadowbrook Inn (711 U.S. 321 Bus.) is hosting its first annual New Year's Eve Family Party (4 to 6 p.m. with an arcade open until 10 p.m.), a chance for kids, teens and parents to rock out to DJ music and enjoy a buffet, face painting, games and hot cocoa. For the parents? Expect cocktails (with a mocktail option). At 6:55 p.m., see a fireworks fountain display. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children (4-years-old and under eat free). With live entertainment courtesy of The Johnson Brothers (from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.), a torch light parade (11:45 p.m.) and fireworks, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort plans to start the New Year with a bang. Vasarely's (502 Beech Mountain Parkway), whose claim to fame (along with the food) is the "best view of the ski slopes" in Beech Mountain, hosts two seatings New Year's Eve. The 6 p.m. seating offers a three-course meal for $30. The 9 p.m. seating includes a champagne toast, party favors and a four-course meal for $50 a person.
