New River Marathon hits road with 900 runners

The New River Marathon saw approximately 900 runners attend its inaugural event.

The inaugural New River Marathon welcomed more than 900 registered runners from 21 states and Canada to the Brownwood, Todd and Fleetwood communities this past Saturday, May 7.

"From the conception, we wanted the runners and their families to have a great racing experience and to experience the beauty of our New River Valley, Ashe County, and North Carolina's High Country," race co-director Ken Sevensky said. "It was our desire was to create a race festival that offered races that appealed to runners of all abilities. Runners/walkers had a choice of four races: Marathon, half marathon, 5K, and 1-mile fun run."

Marathon Results
The marathon had more than 250 registered runners. Scott Kennedy of Rock Hill, S.C. was the overall winner in the marathon (3:01:57). Kennedy was followed Ryan Himmelsbach of Denver, Penn. (3:03:34) and Eric John of Covington, Ga. (3:05:35). The ladies winner in the marathon was Terri Johnson of Charlotte (3:32:35), followed by Heather Grant of Raleigh (3:38:16) and Kayla Bratcher of New Port Richy, Fla. (3:41:56).

Half-Marathon Results
The half-marathon had more than 500 registered runners and was won by Scott Assenmacher of Winston-Salem (1:16:07). Assenmacher was followed by Amos Shuman of Asheville (1:17:27) and Rick Sorenson of Lynchburg, Va. (1:26:32). The ladies winner in the half-marathon was Farrell Hudzik of Charlotte (1:32:23), followed by Daphne Weyand of Taylors, S.C. (1:37:43) and Kelsey Lingerfelt of Wilmington (1:40:01).

5K Results
The 5K had more than 100 runners and was won by Jonathon Nichols of Jefferson (21:40). Nichols was followed by Kaleb Walker of Taylorsville (23:36) and Neil Mosca of Durham (23:47). The ladies winner in the 5K was Lynde Ring of Warrensville (25:58), followed by Victoria Reed of Jefferson (26:01) and Paige Cooper of Taylorsville (26:09).

1-Mile Fun Run
The 1-mile fun run had nine runners. The overall winner was Emma Kate Sevensky of Fleetwood (6:36). Sevensky was followed by James Gilreath III of Manteo (6:37) and Liam Bartman of Charlotte (8:08).
