The Boone Bicycle Initiative has been awarded $1,819 through Appalachian State University’s Greek Week Mini-Grant program.

BBI was selected to be one of four local agencies receiving funds raised during the 2012 Greek Week event.

This generous award will help to strengthen the program by covering general operating expenses, while also providing the resources for the BBI to expand and offer more services, according to initiative officials.

Originally started as a project of Appalachian State University students, BBI has since relocated to an off-campus position and has expanded its reach into the community.

With the Greek Week Grant, BBI officials hope to continue with expanding their services, such as hosting maintenance workshops and creating an Earn-A-Bike program, while continuing to improve upon their primary mission of renting bicycles at a low cost to community members and students.

BBI is located on Depot Street in downtown Boone. Its hours are 6 to 9 p.m. on Sundays and Thursdays. For more information, contact (bikeboone@gmail.com)
