‘Isabella Propeller’ wins Mom’s Choice Award

A children’s book set in Blowing Rock recently made national news, when it captured one of the premier awards in literature for young readers.

Mom’s Choice Awards announced that the children’s picture book, “Isabella Propeller and the Magic Beanie,” written by Jonathan Graves and illustrated by Gail Haley, has received a Gold Award in the category of Children’s Picture Books: Adventure, Adventurers and Heroes.

The Mom’s Choice Awards named “Isabella Propeller and the Magic Beanie” “one of the best in family-friendly media, products and services.”

Author Graves said, “The book continues to be well received, most importantly, by its young audience. And what better endorsement can you have? When moms choose, everyone listens.”

“Isabella Propeller and the Magic Beanie” has received multiple awards in the two years it has been available, including The Children’s Literary Classics Award, The Cox Historical Fiction Award and a raving review by The Midwest Book Review. In addition, illustratrator Haley is a past recipient of The Caldecott Award.

“Isabella Propeller and the Magic Beanie” is the story of a young girl who happens upon a beanie, while playing in her grandmother’s attic. Through a series of events, she encounters a woman who, legend has it, lives in a cave nearby and possesses the gift of flight. Upon meeting the “wind keeper,” Isabella receives the gift of a red feather, along with the knowledge that she, too, possesses the gift of flying.

About Jonathan Graves

Telling stories started with his own children when they were young and is now a tradition that continues with his grandchildren on the “story bench” in the garden of his Blowing Rock home.
