Humane Society opens its doors to potential pet owners

There are several animals seeking a home for the holidays at the Watauga Humane Society Shelter.

The Christmas Open House will be held Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the shelter located on Casey Lane in Boone. Visitors can meet with the cats and dogs in need a home.

For those who can't adopt, gifts such as Kong toys for dogs, cat toys, canned dog and cat food, nail clippers, grooming clippers, treats and gift cards to Lowe's Hardware, Lowe's Foods, Wal-Mart, and Staples will be accepted.

WHS T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts will be available for purchase with proceeds to benefit the shelter.

Refreshments will be provided and members of the board of directors will be present to meet visitors.

"At the Watauga Humane Society, it is our fondest wish for each and every animal at our shelter to find a forever home for the holidays. We have animals at our shelter who have been with us for nearly a year, animals whose owners were forced to surrender them due to hardship," said Ellen Jo Kraemer of WHS. "Adopting a homeless dog or cat is the perfect way to celebrate the spirit of loving and giving."

The shelter is open Tuesday through Friday 12:30 to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Photos of animals available for adoption are posted at
