Blowing Rock’s Eve Sigmon and Washington, D.C.’s Michelle
Obama. You might want to call them presidential pen pals.
Sigmon, a sixth-grader at Two
Rivers Community School, took advantage of an assignment in teacher Rachel Wood’s class to write a
letter to first lady Michelle Obama.
“We had to pick a pen pal and we were allowed to pick
anyone,” Sigmon said. “I picked Michelle Obama and wrote to her in January. About three weeks later
I received her letter.”
Obama sent a package to Sigmon that contained a handwritten note card
answering several of the student’s questions, an autographed photo of herself and the president, a
photo of the first family, a photo of the Obamas’ dog, Bo, and some activity sheets.
“I
wrote to her because she seemed like a nice person and she is married to the president,” Sigmon
said. “I also think she is a good role model.
“Most of the other kids in the class wrote to
other kids their own age, but I picked Michelle Obama, and she wrote back.”
In her letter to
the first lady, Sigmon asked her what her favorite book was, what her favorite foods were and how
many rooms were in the White House.
Obama’s reply indicated that she tries to eat healthy
fruits and vegetables, but occasionally enjoys pizza and french fries; her favorite book is “The
Song of Solomon”; and the White House has too many rooms to count.
She also thanked Sigmon
for the wonderful letter and wrote, “It sounds like you have an amazing family and three awesome
dogs!”
Sigmon lives in Blowing Rock with her parents, Heather and Gary, and older brother
Eli.
Dear Eve,
Thanks for the wonderful letter. It sounds like you have an amazing family and 3 awesome dogs! You sound like a very mature young lady.
I love to eat good nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables. But I also love pizza and french fries every once in a while.
I love to spend time with my girls, and I also enjoy getting lots of exercise. My favorite book is “Song of Solomon,” which may be too grown up for you. My 10-year-old daughter, Sasha, recommends the book, “Give Me a Call,” the story of a young girl discovering herself. You might want to give that a try.
The White House has too many rooms to count. It is a very big house because it doesn’t just belong to us, it belongs to the entire country. So, we need a lot of rooms so that anyone who wants to visit can do so.
Hope this answers your questions. Keep working hard at school.
Warmly,
Michelle Obama
