Watauga County Schools announced Tuesday that Dr. David Fonseca will stay on as interim superintendent through June 30, 2014.

Fonseca assumed leadership of Watauga County Schools in late March, when the school system announced a $186,110 buyout of Superintendent David Kafitz’s contract following public complaints about his interactions with community members.

A statement from the school system indicated the appointment was approved by the Watauga County Board of Education on Monday.

“The Board of Education has been very impressed by how Dr. Fonseca is handling his additional responsibilities during this time of transition in our schools,” school board chairman Lee Warren said in the statement. “He is clearly a highly qualified and well respected educational leader who has built strong relationships with the board, with school system personnel and throughout our community.”

“I am honored that the board has chosen to entrust me with this additional role,” Fonseca said in the release. “Educational leadership is a path to service, not a seat of power, and I will do everything humanly possible to help our schools keep students and teachers first in all that we do.”

Fonseca earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Veracruz in Veracruz, Mexico, and a doctoral degree in educational leadership from Appalachian State University. He held administrative positions in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Catawba County Schools and Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools prior to coming to Watauga County Schools as the assistant superintendent of instructional services.

School system spokesman Marshall Ashcraft said Tuesday that he does not know when the school board will commence a search for a new superintendent. Ashcraft said he could not provide exact salary figures for Fonseca until Wednesday.
