Build a house to help the homeless

Culinary construction will benefit the Hospitality House this Friday in Blowing Rock.

Gingerbread houses will be on display at the former Mast Candy Barrel, located at 1087 Main Street in Blowing Rock.

The public will be the judge by voting $1 at a time into the ballot box beside each entry. The money will benefit the Hospitality House.

The gingerbread house building competition is sponsored by the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce as a part of "Festive Friday - A Hometown Holiday."

"We are excited to host this event for the community and to raise money for those who do not have a home this holiday season", said Nancy Santay, co-chair of the Chamber of Commerce Business Support Committee. "And we have many more family fun filled activities planned for the event."

The festival will last all day Friday.

Other activities include Strolling Christmas Carolers from St. Mary's and First Baptist Church, a visit with Santa Claus, live Christmas greenery will be for sale, Salvation Army Bell Ringers, a book and bake sale, and a reading of "The Night Before Christmas" hosted by the library, along with refreshments for the children. Blowing Rock merchants will be offering refreshments during the event, with extended hours so that residents and visitors can enjoy the beautifully decorated windows and have a chance to see the unique items Blowing Rock merchants have to offer.
