Boone Kmart to close in September
Kmart of Boone has become the latest chain franchise on Blowing Rock Road to close its doors, as its parent company, Sears Holding, announced this week it is aiming for summer liquidation.
“The Kmart store at 1620 Blowing Rock Road will close to the public in mid-September,” said Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for the company.
The store will begin its liquidation sale on June 29.
“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce ongoing expenses, adjust our asset base and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” Riefs said. “These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail at the store, online and in the home.”
Riefs said 41 employees would be affected by the closing.
“Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores," he said.
Sears recently announced the closing of its West Jefferson store. Kmart of Boone first opened in March 1979. The store was leased.
