Boone, Belk host KidFest 2011
What happens when the town of Boone partners with Belk for a day of fun, games and education?
Hint: Not a new wardrobe for the Boone Town Council.
It's KidFest 2011, and all High Country families are invited.
Each year, Belk at Boone Mall hosts a fashion show, strutting their spring stuff with a sale to boot.
"They asked if we'd like to come out," said Lane Weiss, water conservation program coordinator with the town of Boone. "Since it's springtime, and especially with the weather this past week, we figured we'd give folks a Saturday event, rain or shine."
KidFest will be held in the center of Boone Mall, starting at noon with a kids' fashion show emceed by Dan Meyer, president of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce.
As for games, the town's "Green Team," consisting of Weiss, Marsha Story with the recycling program, and Shannon Isaacs with Adopt-a-Street and litter prevention programs, has devised a series of family-friendly activities, with help from Belk staff.
This includes Litter Bug Toss-Along, Recycle Bingo and more, all to raise environmental awareness.
"We're also going to do a 'guess how many cans fit in the rain barrel' game, and a variety of others for kids to play, along with our bookmark-making station, which was really popular last year," Weiss said.
And, of course, there will be face-painting, balloons, cotton candy and plenty of giveaways.
"Temporary tattoos were a huge hit last year," Weiss said. "They're awesome ... they've got flames and say 'Born to Recycle.' We're encouraging kids to be better environmental stewards."
And it can be contagious. "We teach the kids so they can hound their parents," she admitted.
But parents needn't worry. Weiss and company are bringing information and giveaways from their respective programs, including promotional material for the ongoing rain barrel sale, the "adoption" programs - Adopt-a-Street, Adopt-a-Stream, Adopt-a-Flowerbed - and recycling.
Representatives from Safe Kids will also attend, promoting car seat safety, fire prevention, bicycle and pedestrian safety and more.
"A lot of the educational activities are for all ages," Weiss said. "It's a fun day, where people can get some good giveaways, have fun with the kids, and not have to worry about the weather."
The fun takes place Saturday, April 9, from noon to 3 p.m. at Boone Mall, located at 1180 Blowing Rock Road in Boone. For more information, contact Lane Weiss at (828) 268-6250.
