Beech, LMC present cycling events
Beech Mountain Resort has teamed up with Lees-McRae College's Cycling program to offer three downhill mountain bike and slalom racing events in 2010.
Three race weekends are set for the summer: July 10 and 11, Aug. 7 and 8, and Sept. 11 and 12. Race entry fees will include all classes. Amateur and professional categories will be offered. The Saturday downhill race will take place at Beech Mountain Resort and the Sunday slalom race will take place at Lees-McRae College.
Both the downhill series and dual slalom series will feature classes for beginner, intermediate, expert and pro riders. Amateur riders will be competing for product prizes donated from event sponsors. Pro racers will be competing for a cash prize. The downhill entry fees will be $40 for amateurs and $45 for pros, while the slalom entry fees will be $30 for amateurs and $35 for pro.
Both events will feature an overall series winner for both dual slalom and downhill individually, but there will also be a dual cup champion, for riders that compete in both the downhill and the dual slalom.
The first downhill race will be on the Triple Crown DH's Finals track, taking the high-speed quad to the top of the mountain. Fast race times last year were around the 2:25 mark, and the downhill course has been improved to ensure flow and fun. The Dual Slalom will be on the '07 and '08 Collegiate National Championship track. The Dual Slalom is one of the best courses in the south east, starting with tight berms and small jumps, with progressively bigger ones towards the finish. Fast race times down the track are just under 30 seconds
Downhill registration will open at 8 a.m. with practice opening at 8:30 a.m. Registration will close at 1 p.m., along with practice closing at 1:30 p.m. A mandatory riders meeting will take place at 1:45 p.m. The first racer will go off at 2 p.m. Awards will follow 15 minutes after all of the final results are posted. Scenic lift rides will be available to patrons during the downhill events at Beech Mountain Resort.
Dual Slalom registration will open at 8 a.m. with practice starting at 8:30 a.m. Registration closes at 11 a.m. and practice closes at noon. Qualifying will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the race brackets starting at 1 p.m.
