Autumn Times wins state award

Autumn in the High Country brims with hues of gold and red.

Now, we can add silver to that list.

The 2013 Autumn Times, The Mountain Times’ seasonal tourist guide, took second place in the Best Niche Publication category of the N.C. Press Association's 2013 News, Editorial and Photojournalism Contest’s Community Division (more than 10,000 circulation).

The Mountain Times
editor Frank Ruggiero, layout artist Johnny Hayes and staff were recognized by the NCPA for their work on the publication. Ruggiero and Hayes are the Autumn Times’ editor and layout editor, respectively.

According to contest judges, the 2013 Autumn Times features “big bold layout with beautiful scenic photography that will attract visitors to pick it up.”

“It’s great to win such a prestigious award from the North Carolina Press Association,” Mountain Times Publications vice president and group publisher Gene Fowler said. “Our staff of 12 professional journalists and contributing writers produce an outstanding product, and this award confirms what our readers have known for a long time."

The 2013 award is one of many for The Mountain Times and its seasonal guides, with the 2011 Summer Times having won third place in the same category. Fowler only anticipates the products to improve.

“We will take our seasonal tourism-centered products to a new level this year, as we expand our printed lineup with a best-of-its-kind, tourism-centered website,” he said. “Details on the launch of this new site will be coming in the next few weeks.”
