ASU Polar Plunge raises $8,000 for Special Olympics
A total of $8,234 was raised for the Watauga County Special
Olympics at the 14th annual Polar Plunge held at Appalachian State University Feb. 16.
More
than 140 plungers participated. All of the money raised will support Watauga County aSpecial
Olympics athletes.
Prizes were awarded to the most extreme costume for male and female
jumpers, as well as to the top fundraising group and individual.
The most extreme costume
winners were Benjamin Franklin as “Flash Santa” and Courtney Armstrong as “Punk Daisy Cart.”
The top fundraising groups were the ASU Sports Management class, raising $1,587, and
ASU ROTC, raising $595.
The top individual for donations was Stacey Critcher, raising $110.
“Despite the dreary start to the day, it was a successful and splashing success,” said Keron
Poteat, Watauga County Special Olympics coordinator.
She said donations from corporate
sponsors are still being received, so the total amount raised may be more.
