So far this summer season, Ensemble Stage has presented a heartwarming comedy with “Moon Over the Brewery” and a hilariously fast-paced look at the United States in “The Complete History of America (Abridged).”

Now, the company offers something completely different for theater lovers: a suspenseful thriller.
Ensemble Stage will present “Fit to Kill” at the Blowing Rock School Auditorium from Saturday, July 28, through Sunday, Aug. 5. Tickets are on sale now.

Directed by Mark Woodard, “Fit to Kill” stars Robyne Parrish as Janice Blake, Ariel Nicastro as Amy Courtland and Joshua Yoder as Adrian Bonham.

Adrian is a chess champion whose career and lavish lifestyle have been propped up by his wife, Janice Blake, an older yet vibrant woman who has made her fortune in the exercise and fitness industry.

The arrival of Amy, a reporter with an agenda of her own, unleashes a whirlwind of deadly schemes that will keep audiences guessing until the final seconds.

Deception, strategy and betrayal dominate the relationship triangle, leaving the audience guessing until the final minutes of the play. Written by Victor L. Cahn, “Fit to Kill” also features more than its fair share of humorous moments and witty dialogue.

“It’s not really a whodunit,” Woodard said. “It’s more about who might get killed and who would have the motive for that.”

Set in a contemporary upscale home in Connecticut, “Fit to Kill” shows what can happen when greed overtakes normal human emotions, and the rules of the game are thrown out of the window.

“It all takes place in richly furnished home, what I would describe as a sad castle,” Woodard said. “It definitely has some adult themes. If it were a movie it would probably be rated PG-13.”

According to Woodard, the Ensemble Stage production of “Fit to Kill” is the local premiere of the play.
Praise for Cahn’s fast-paced thriller includes, “Deliciously scary...an event worth celebrating...(Cahn) establishes himself a master of black comedy involving murder in the great tradition of ‘Wait Until Dark,’ ‘Deathtrap’ and ‘Sleuth’ ... a tour-de-force achievement ...” –UPI; “A comedy noir that tells of infidelity and murder, with a healthy dose of humor and requisite multiplying plot twists ... (a) witty pulp thriller.” – Timeout New York; and “Fabulous...a comic thriller with enough plot twists to fill a festival ... quick exposition, swift character development, perfect dialogue ... a swirling world of money and murder...” – Albany Times-Union.
