'Pageant Play' opens July 29
Ensemble Stage, the High Country's only year-round professional theater, opens its third show of its summer season with the hilarious and very politically incorrect "Pageant Play" this Friday, July 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Blowing Rock School Auditorium.
Written in 2008 by playwrights Matthew Wilkas and Mark Setlock, the Ensemble Stage production of "Pageant Play" is the first one staged in North Carolina.
"It's totally outrageous," director Gary Lee Smith said. "It's one of the most over-the-top productions you'll ever see around here. Plus, it's really, really funny."
"Pageant Play" stars Mark Allen Woodard as Buddy and Bobby, Luke Schaffer as Gunner and Bob, Lauren Flynn as Pinky and Caitie Moss as Marge and Mother.
Where are the adorable 4-year-old beauty queens, you might ask. This insane comedy explores the behind-the-scenes aspects of toddler beauty contests, ugly warts and all.
Take away the kids, and you're left with the crazy mothers and insane coaches of the junior beauty pageant circuit. "Pageant Play" takes look at the adult side of a surreal world filled with glitz, glamour and really small teeth caps.
One mother will do anything to make sure her little angel wins, but a newcomer to the pageant circuit shows up and starts grabbing all the glory. Witness the ridiculous lengths mothers and coaches will go to ensure their little 4-year-old diva reigns supreme.
"Pageant Play" contains strong language and isn't recommended for kids under the age of 14.
"Pageant Play" will be performed at the Blowing Rock School Auditorium, located at 160 Sunset Drive in Blowing Rock, July 29, 30, Aug. 1, 2, 5 and 12 at 7:30 p.m., July 30, Aug. 6 and 13 at 2 p.m., and July 31, Aug. 7 and 14 at 3:30 p.m.
Tickets are $16 for adults and $13 for students, seniors and military personnel and can be purchased through the Ensemble Stage website at http://www.ensemblestage.com or by calling (828) 414-1844.
