Curtain opens on 'Certain'
Suspense and drama are the order of the day as Ensemble Stage switches gears from its successful run of "Catfish Moon" to its new production, "Dead Certain," which opens in Blowing Rock on Saturday, July 9.
"I would call it a psychological thriller," director Mark Woodard said. "It is very much like 'Sleuth' or 'Death Trap.' It's a little tricky to describe, because the twists come so early in the play."
"Dead Certain" runs from July 9 through 19, and tickets are $16 for adults and $13 for students, seniors and the military.
"Dead Certain" stars Caroline Kapo as Elizabeth and Lamar Wilson as Michael.
Caroline is a former ballerina whose dance career has been curtailed by a mysterious injury. Embittered by circumstances beyond her control, she has written a play and has hired the out-of-work actor, Michael, to come to her Victorian English mansion and read lines with her.
But are there more devious plans afoot? Revenge is sweet and best served cold, but who is the bigger plotter in the play?
"Things happen quickly in this play, and much is not as it appears at first," Woodard said. "Even though the play was written in the 1990s, it has a timeless feel to it."
"Dead Certain" was written by Marcus Lloyd, who said about the play, "How much control do we have over our lives? Are we following some script out there, or do we have some control?"
