ASU presents ‘First Year Student Showcase’
Welcoming the freshest talent to campus, the Department of Theatre and Dance at Appalachian State University presents “The First Year Student Showcase” Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in I.G. Greer Studio Theater.
Appalachian’s hottest dancers and actors will perform six short plays and five dances. Ticket prices begin at $6 for students.
Joel Williams, associate professor of theater, directs Jon Jory’s play, “University,” highlighting the actors in various college scenarios. Emily Candelario, a junior theater major, assists in the direction of these independent scenes, ranging from freshmen orientation to a study abroad trip in Europe.
Department chairwoman Marianne Adams and dance faculty member Holly Roark each choreograph one of the five original dance pieces. Students choreograph the other three pieces, and all five works feature Appalachian first-year students. Assisted by dance lecturers Rebecca Keeter and Rebecca Quinn, the movement component blends creativity and inspiration using everything from live improvisational music to a pop/rock piece by Coldplay.
“(The showcase) demonstrates what Appalachian first-year students are capable of accomplishing and, who knows, maybe someday you’ll say you knew them when,” a department spokesperson said.
I.G. Greer Studio Theatre is located in the lower level of I.G. Greer Hall, on the building’s east side.
The door faces the B.B. Dougherty Administration Building. Parking is available after 5 p.m. on campus in faculty lots, the College Street parking deck near Belk Library and Information Commons, and the Rivers Street parking deck.
