ASU and BRCT team up for 'Arsenic and Old Lace'
Auditions for Joseph Kesselring's dark comedy, "Arsenic and Old Lace," co-produced by the Appalachian State University Department of Theatre and Dance and Blue Ridge Community Theatre, will be held on Saturday, June 4, at 10 a.m. in the Valborg Theatre on the ASU campus.
Actors will be asked to read from the script. Sides will be available at 9:30 a.m. in the Valborg Lobby. Please see the cast break down below for details about roles. Casting is open to members of the community and ASU students and faculty. There are no roles for actors that look younger than early 20s, but younger people are invited to help with other aspects of the production.
"Arsenic and Old Lace" will be presented as part of ASU's Front of the Curtain Festival, to be held Aug. 9, 10 and 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Valborg.
Rehearsals will begin on Monday, July 11. Rehearsals will be held Monday through Thursday evenings with tech rehearsals Friday and Saturday, Aug. 6 and 7, and dress rehearsals Sunday and Monday evening, Aug. 7 and 8. There will be an open rehearsal on July 21 at 8 p.m. as part of An Appalachian Summer Festival.

Abby Brewster: Loveable and benevolently homicidal aunt. "Plump," Age: Mid-60s.
Martha Brewster: Sweet aunt with Victorian charm. Frail, insane, Abby's partner in crime. Age: Mid-60s.
Teddy Brewster: One of Abby and Martha's nephews. Thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt. Age: Early 40s.
Rev. Dr. Harper: Elaine's father. Age: 60-70.
Elaine Harper: Attractive girl in her 20s. Surprisingly smart minister's daughter. Mortimer's girlfriend.
Mortimer Brewster: Dapper drama critic, in love with Elaine, more than slightly neurotic. Age: 28 to mid-30s. Another nephew of Abby and Martha.
Jonathan Brewster: Escaped from insane asylum, had face altered to look like Boris Karloff in "Frankenstein," tall, dangerous. Age: 38-48. Another nephew of Abby and Martha.
Dr. Einstein: Alcoholic surgeon responsible for Jonathan's face. Short. Age: 50s
Mr. Gibbs: Potential boarder in the Brewster home. Age: 60-70.
Officer Brophy: Beat cop, a real charmer. Age: 25-50
Officer Klein: Beat cop, smart guy and gossip. Age: 25-50
Officer O'Hara: Budding playwright with a large appetite. Age 25-35
Lt. Rooney: Tough, no nonsense police official. Age: 40-50
Mr. Witherspoon: Superintendent of Happy Dale Sanitarium. Tight-lipped disciplinarian. Age: 65-70s.
Mr. Hoskins: Unfortunate victim of Abby and Martha's "hospitality." Dead, but you don't have to learn any lines.
Mr. Spinalzo: Associate of Jonathan and Dr. Einstein. Also dead. No memorization required.
