Weekly dances kick off in Linville
The Mountain Mixers have kicked off the 2013 season of square
dancing and cued ballroom dancing at Linville Land Harbor, and they invite newcomers to a free
preview dance this Sunday, June 2.
The dance party takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Linville Land Harbor recreation hall, where all Mountain Mixers dances are held. Ron Libby and Bill Restall will call the square dances, and Don and Linda Hichman will cue the ballroom dances (rounds).
The Land Harbor residential community has hosted weekly square dances throughout the summer for more than 30 years, attracting the best national and regional callers available. Dances take place Fridays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Sundays from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and Mondays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
You don’t have to be a member of the Mountain Mixers to attend the dances, but club membership is open to everyone — not just Land Harbor residents.
Returning to cue rounds for the third summer will be the Hichmans, who teach and cue in the Charlotte and Asheville areas, as well. Round dancing is choreographed, cued ballroom dancing led by a cuer, including the waltz, two-step, cha-cha, rumba, fox trot and more.
Barbara Tew has been dancing with the Mountain Mixers since 2005 and said she enjoys both round dancing and square dancing. “They each meet my need for physical and mental activity and socialization,” she said.
Mountain Mixers members welcome new people to attend the dances this summer, including locals, seasonal residents, visitors and dancers of all skill levels. On Monday evenings, the Mountain Mixers host advanced-level square dancing, which is not as physically strenuous but is more mentally challenging, Tew said.
In addition to dances, Mountain Mixers offers square dance lessons on Thursdays and round dance classes on Mondays. Visit http://www.mountainmixers.com for a schedule.
A Round and Square Dance Weekend will take place Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28, featuring round dance with the Hichmans and square dance caller Tim Marriner. The cost is $30 per person before July 1 and $35 per person after that date.
Plenty of parking is available at the Linville Land Harbor recreation hall. Costs for dances and lessons range from $4 to $6.50. For more information, including a schedule of dances, workshops and featured callers, visit http://www.mountainmixers.com.
