Todd Wright Trio to perform in Ashe
The Ambassador of Jazz for Western North Carolina is visiting
Hailed as such for his contributions to jazz in the High Country, Todd Wright and friends will perform Saturday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the gallery of the Ashe Arts Center.
The Todd Wright Trio, featuring Wright on saxophone, Keith McCutchen on piano and Andy Page on guitar, “covers the full spectrum, from Gershwin to Streisand,” according to the Ashe County Arts Council, which is presenting the concert.
Wright joined Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music faculty in 1990 and has been a fixture in the local jazz scene ever since.
In addition to his many awards, including the Jazz Fellowship Award from the N.C. Council, Wright has performed with numerous jazz luminaries, including Benny Golson, Wycliffe Gordon and the Marcus Roberts Trio, and he’s also opened for the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet.
At ASU, he is director of jazz studies and an instructor, teaching improvisation, piano and jazz ensemble, among many other courses.
When not performing in area bands and projects, Wright’s bandmates, Page and McCutchen, also teach in the Hayes School of Music. Page teaches numerous guitar courses, and McCutchen directs the university’s gospel choir, glee club and jazz vocal ensemble.
The Ashe Arts Center is located at 303 School Ave. in West Jefferson. Tickets cost $13 for adults and $5 for students and are available in advance at the Ashe Arts Center or by calling (336) 846-2787. For more information on the Ashe County Arts Council, visit http://www.ashecountyarts.org.
