Swedish musician Göran Marcusson performs Feb. 14
Internationally acclaimed flutist Göran Marcusson will perform Feb. 14 at ASU.
Flutist Göran Marcusson will perform during a guest recital
Feb. 14 at Appalachian State University.
The program begins at 6 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s
Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Marcusson will be accompanied by pianist Tim Carey. The duo
is beginning its North American tour with the performance at Appalachian.
The program
includes Eldin Burton’s “Sonatina,” Philippe Gaubert’s “Sonata,” Hugo Alfvén’s “Vallflickans dans
(Herdsmaiden’s dance),” Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s “Till Rosorna (To the Roses),” Wilhelm
Stenhammar’s “Sentimental Romance, Op. 28, No. 2 in F-sharp minor” and François Borne’s “Carmen
Fantasie.”
Marcusson won the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition in 1987.
Soon after, he won an award at Crussellweek in Finland, and in 1991, a prize at the Bodensee Music
Competition. In 1992, the same year he received his soloist diploma from the University of
Gothenberg, he received a prize at the Vienna Music Competition and was awarded a handmade flute of
Waterford Crystal for his outstanding performance in the masterclass of James Galway.
Highly
versatile and interested in his native Swedish music, he has introduced many new pieces into the
American flutists’ repertoire.
Marcusson’s CDs have received rave reviews. They include “The
Nordic Flute” with the Camerata Roman, “The Swedish Romantic Flute” with the strings of the
Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, “American Sonatas” with his duo-partner Joakim Kalhed, “Reflective
Flute” with the GoteborgsMusiken, and his latest CD, “Inspiration by Bach” with the Camerata
Calluna.
At home in Sweden, he plays with the GotesborgsMusiken Chamber Ensemble, maintains a
busy international schedule and gives solo appearances and masterclasses in the U.S., South America
and throughout Europe.
A native of England, Carey enjoys a career full of variety as solo
performer, chamber musician, orchestral keyboardist and teacher. He partners with many
instrumentalists, especially flutists, in a variety of chamber music combinations and gives
occasional solo recitals and concerto performances.
Over the last few years, he has established
an international reputation as a flutist’s collaborator and has become the regular pianist for many
international events. He is also a founder and member of the London Tango Quintet, specializing in
the music of Piazzolla.
As orchestral keyboard player, he has worked in the past with the
London Symphony Orchestra, the Bournemouth Orchestra, the Philharmonia and the Ulster Orchestra. He
is currently a regular pianist with the BBC Concert Orchestra.
