Soweto Gospel Choir Jan. 28 at ASU
The Soweto Gospel Choir will perform Jan. 28 at Farthing Auditorium.
The Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir brings its
high-energy performance to Appalachian State University Saturday, Jan. 28.
The show starts at
8 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium.
Hailed for its grace and energy expressed through dance, music
and costume, the Soweto Gospel Choir, from Soweto, South Africa, has been gaining international
accolades and acclaim.
Formed in 2002, the choir has been traveling around the world, gaining
exposure through its unique combinations of African song and dance. The choir’s first album, “Voices
of Heaven,” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s World Music Charts within three weeks of its release in the
United States.
In 2007 and 2008, the choir received a Grammy Award in the category of “Best
Traditional World Music” for its second album, “Blessed,” and its third album, “African Spirit,”
respectfully. The choir has since had two additional Grammy nominations and has been granted
countless other awards.
Throughout its worldwide touring, the choir has had the opportunity
to perform alongside artists like Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban, John Legend, Kirk
Franklin, Bebe Winans, Diana Ross, Celine Dion and U2, just to name a few.
Advance tickets
cost $20 for adults, $16 for students ages 6 to 18, $15 for ASU students and $10 for children 5 and
younger. The ASU Performing Arts Series offers a special discounted price of $10 for ASU faculty and
staff members who present their ASU identification card.
