Scanlin presents violin recital June 10
Maura Shawn Scanlin, of Boone, will be giving a free violin recital on Friday, June 10, at 7 p.m. at Appalachian State University's Hayes School of Music Recital Hall.
Scanlin, 15, just finished her sophomore year of high school at the University of N.C. School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. She began playing the violin at the age of 3. Her teachers have included Nan Stricklen of Banner Elk, Jacob Dakon of Appalachian State's Community Music School and Dr. Nancy Bargerstock of Appalachian State's Hayes School of Music. Scanlin now studies with Sarah Johnson at the N.C. School of the Arts.
She has won several awards in North Carolina competitions, has been a soloist with Charlotte Youth Symphony Orchestra, and she is the current U.S. National Scottish Fiddling Champion.
The June 10 recital will include the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor, Paganini's Caprice No. 20 in D major: Allegretto, Bach's Sonata No. 2 in A minor: Andante, Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saens, and some Celtic fiddling, as well.
