Mama's Black Sheep at Twigs Friday
By Frank Ruggiero
Baltimore-based duo Mama's Black Sheep will perform at Twigs in Blowing Rock on Friday, Oct. 16.
Mama's Black Sheep is the musical collision of singer-songwriters Ashland Miller (guitar/vocals) and Laura Cerulli (drums/vocals), both veterans of the singer-songwriter circuit.
Ashland, an Appalachian State University School of Music graduate, toured for 12 years as part of the award-winning acoustic duo CommonbonD, releasing six albums and performing on The Nashville Network (TNN) and in more than 40 states, as well as overseas.
Ashland's songwriting, harmonies and creative musical arrangements have been shared on stages with talent like John Mayer, Richie Havens, Catie Curtis and Sophie B. Hawkins.
Cerulli previously fronted her own band, Cerulean Groove, and since 2005 has been touring nationally and internationally as a member of SONiA & disappear fear. Cerulli's distinctive style has been seen on stages from the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas to the Barns at Wolftraip in Virginia to California's High Sierra Music Festival, the Red Roof Women's Festival in Ontario, Canada, and even down under at Woodford Folk Festival in Australia.
Together, Miller and Cerulli create a unique tapestry, weaving songs of vibrant color and rich texture, centered around a dynamic conversation between guitar and percussion.
Bob Steel of Baltimore Out Loud writes, "Cerulli opens her mouth and the world stands still as she wrings every drop of emotion out of the lyrics with her powerful, soaring voice, forged in the fire of the blues and tempered in the cool technique of her classical training."
Effortlessly erasing boundaries between the genres of country, folk, pop, R&B and rock, Mama's Black Sheep features the original songs of Miller and Cerulli. The band also mixes in covers, ranging from classics to contemporary.
Mama's Black Sheep will perform Friday, Oct. 16, at Twigs, located at 7956 Valley Blvd. in Blowing Rock. For more information, call (828) 295-5050. For more information on Mama's Black Sheep, visit http://www.mamasblacksheep.com.
