Daniel and Lauren Goans of Lowland Hum don’t always like to be the center of attention.

Even when they’re the headlining act, the husband and wife duo likes for its shows to incorporate the audience whenever the opportunity presents itself.

“We really let the audience shape the experience,” said Daniel Goans, who plays guitar and sings in the duo. “The touring lifestyle is unusual, and it’s unhealthy for you to be the main event every night. So, we started opening up our concerts for comments and questions. We even started having conversations with the crowd during the shows. Together, we can create the night.”

To create a more interactive experience, the couple also began handing out lyric booklets to its songs, so audience members could sing along if they chose to.

Lauren, who is a visual artist, also began providing the artistic backdrop for their shows. “The backdrop really frames the show,” Goans said.

They are hoping to create that same unifying experience when they stop in Boone for a show at Bald Guy Brew at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17. The show is part of the group’s larger musical road trip, “The North Carolina Love Tour,” which is keyed to promote their love for the Tar Heel state.

Altogether, they are playing 17 shows in the month of January alone. So far, they have played a total of 60 shows since August to promote the album.

Lowland Hum grew from Daniel’s solo career.

“I was writing songs when I met Lauren, and, as our relationship developed, she started singing with me,” Goans said. “She actually recorded on half of the album that came out in 2011.”

As the relationship grew, so did Lauren’s role in Daniel’s career. Before long, the two were synonymous with one another, and the duo was solidified.

The duo’s first album, “Native Air,” is a dynamic, harmony-driven folk album.

“We depend heavily on vocals,” Goans said. “The sound is stripped down. There’s not much instrumentation live, and we try to stick close to that with the recording.”

Goans said this is the first record he has been involved with that has gained “some national press.”
He credits the extra attention to Lauren’s addition.

“We are excited to come back to Boone with new material,” he said. “It’s always fun to come back and visit.”
