Fans of the monthly Blowing Rock Jazz Society shows will
definitely want to savor this weekend’s show.
The organization has decided that rather than
host monthly shows during the winter, it will hibernate and return to action in April 2012 (see
letter to the editor on page 6-A).
The BRJS’ final show for 2011 will take place at 7 p.m.
on Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock. The show will feature jazz luminaries
Ocie Davis and Ashlin Parker.
Trumpeter Parker first picked up the horn at the age of 10 and
later studied jazz at the Shenandoah Conservatory. Later, he gained professional experience as a
sideman, arranger and bandleader for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines from 2005-07.
In 2009, he
joined the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and performed on the band’s album, “Book One,” a Grammy Award
winner for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.
Over the past few years, he has performed with
the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, featuring Ellis and Delfeayo Marsalis, Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown,
Government Majik and Russell Batiste. Tickets for Sunday’s BRJS concert at the Meadowbrook Inn are
$15 for the general public, $5 for students and free for all BRJS members in good standing.
The Meadowbrook Inn is located at 711 Main St. in Blowing Rock. For more information, call
the Meadowbrook Inn at (828) 295-4300 or visit brjs.blogspot.com.
