The town of Boone continues the 2013 Summer Concerts at the Jones House series Friday with performances by Shane Chalke’s BE Jazz Band and The Lucky Strikes, starting at 5 p.m. at the Jones House Cultural and Community Center in downtown Boone.

The event will begin with Shane Chalke’s BE Jazz Band, featuring bandleader Shane Chalke on trumpet and flugelhorn, Jim Fleri on piano, Ben McPherron on bass, Michael Willis on drums and Maureen Renihan on vocals.

Chalke founded the group in the summer of 2011 as a staple band at restaurants in Banner Elk. The group now performs every Wednesday evening at the Sushi Club in Banner Elk. This will be Shane Chalke’s BE Jazz Band’s first performance at the Jones House concert series.

The Lucky Strikes will follow, starting at about 6 p.m. and featuring a set of jazz selections, dance tunes and golden oldies. The band is led by pianist Jim Fleri and features Doug Brantz on guitar, Steve Roark on sax and keys and Jamie Blanton on drums.

“These guys had a great set when they performed at the Jones House two years ago,” concerts organizer Mark Freed said. “I anticipate our concert audience hearing a variety of familiar and unfamiliar tunes and songs — all done in good taste!

“We are really glad to offer another evening of jazz music. The High Country is most well-known for our thriving traditional old-time and bluegrass music scene, but we also have some fantastic jazz musicians in our community.”

Earlier this summer, concerts have featured performances by Swing Guitars and Todd Wright, in addition to this Friday’s jazz-centered concert.

The Concerts at the Jones House are produced by the town of Boone and sponsored by the Downtown Boone Development Association, Mast General Store, Footsloggers, MPrints, Stick Boy Bread Company, Melanie’s and Farmer’s Rentals. The free concerts take place every Friday, starting at 5 p.m., rain or shine. People are encouraged to bring their own chair or blanket.
