Jones House goes ‘Buck’ wild
The Buck Haggard Band and The Buck Stops Here will perform at
the Jones House Cultural and Community Center on Friday, starting at 5 p.m., for a free concert,
bringing classic country and traditional string band roots sounds to the First Friday festivities in
The Buck Haggard Band will begin at 5 p.m., featuring bandleader, singer and acoustic guitaist George Wilson, who started the band when realizing the lack of local and regional groups performing classic country material, let alone any radio play. Wilson gathered a group of talented, veteran musicians, and the band has been the region’s premier classic country band ever since, with Ed Main on lead guitar and keyboards, Jimmy Cannon on steel guitar, Tracy Brown on bass and Greg Russell on drums.
“These guys are real pros,” concerts organizer Mark Freed said. “They have a terrific repertoire of country gems, they do it well, and they have a lot of fun while they’re at it.”
The Buck Stops Here is a newly formed old-time string band, featuring four talented, young women swapping fiddles, banjos, guitar, mandolins and more, along with the brother of one playing bass. While the group is newly formed, the individuals have been playing and performing for several years, and the group is quickly drawing attraction and gigs.
They will be playing earlier that day at the Doc & Rosa Lee Watson MusicFest ’n Sugar Grove, later that night at Espresso News and in the morning at the Watauga County Farmers’ Market. The group includes Gailanne Amundsen, formerly of Jubal’s Kin, Julie Chiles, Rebecca Jones, Shona Carr and Jeffrey Amundsen.
The Buck Stops Here will perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m., during the Downtown Boone Art Crawl celebration at the Jones House, featuring new exhibits by Jody Bargerstock, Bob Reneau and Tori Allen.
The performances are part of the Summer Concerts at the Jones House series, featuring weekly concerts in downtown Boone every Friday, from June through September. The series is produced by the Boone Cultural Resources Department, with support from season sponsors, including Downtown Boone Development Association, Footsloggers, Mast General Store, Farmers Rentals and Power Equipment, MPrints, Stick Boy Bread Company and Melanie’s.
