Get Anointed with Holy Ghost Tent Revival
The grainy, good-feeling sound of Holy Ghost Tent Revival will be loud on April 1 at the Boone Saloon.
The Greensboro band performs with a sound its members have lovingly crafted all for their own, with Stephen Murray at the banjo and guitar, Mike O'Malley at the keys, Ross Montsinger with the drums, Matt Martin at the guitar and banjo, Hank Widmer with the trombone and euphonium and Patrick Leslie with the bass. Each element meshes together to create the group's unique fusion.
The music they make resembles the name they have taken for the lead. Good times and sundry grooves lend their sound an uplifting exchange for audience participation. Tailored with a clean-cut, old-fashioned look, the band gives jangly dance steps a reason to be shown off.
Following their last show in New Bern for the New Bern concert series, the group will be coming to Boone as part of its 23-date tour of the East Coast.
Incorporating the early days of blues and southern rock, the band melds with western rock and Appalachian banjo picking, as well. The sound is sometimes mellow and thoughtful, but like the track, "Someone Too," from their album, Family, it can break into a ragtime release. The corners of their sound turn and, with talent, the group smoothes the edges and leaves the audience unaware of what's next.
The group has released three albums, the most recent, Family, as a 12-inch EP. They take pride in the culture that North Carolina fosters, containing coast and mountains and a rich history of musical talent. Born in North Carolina, the sound appreciates the soil from which it came.
The quirks, comedies, sorrows and joys of old musical heritage performed through the minds of zealous young musicians promise great expectations for next week's show.
Holy Ghost Tent Revival performs Thursday, April 1, at 10:30 p.m. at the Boone Saloon. Cover costs $5, and only those 21 and up will be admitted. The Boone Saloon is located at 489 W. King St. in Boone.
