Fred’s General Concerts
The annual Summer Sunday Concerts at Fred’s General Mercantile
on Beech Mountain start this Sunday, July 14.
The first concert will feature Joe Shannon and the Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys.
“I’m not exactly sure when we started playing at Fred’s, but it’s been about 30 years ago, and we’ve played each year since the first Summer Sunday Concert,” Joe Shannon said.
“With the panorama of surrounding mountains, Fred’s is a beautiful place to play, and because of quick weather changes on Beech Mountain, you never know exactly what to expect. We’ve played in the rain, in the fog and during heavy winds. We’ve played in mid-July, as many in the audience wore coats, earmuffs and were covered with blankets. The amazing thing is that no matter what the weather, folks stay and listen. And we’re always grateful.”
The Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys feature David Johnson (fiddle and guitar), Scott Freeman (mandolin and fiddle), Steve Lewis (guitar and banjo) and Shannon (hammer dulcimer, harmonica and concertina). The band rarely performs outside the context of the Mountain Home Music concert series, but, in addition to playing at Fred’s each year, the Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys opened for Garrison Keillor last March at ASU.
Fred’s General Mercantile is located at 501 Beech Mountain Parkway in Beech Mountain. The concert starts at 6:30 p.m., and admission is free. For more information, call Fred’s at (828) 387-4838.
