Contra Dance Dec. 7 in Sugar Grove
The Boone Country Dancers will present a community contra dance
on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Old Cove Creek School gym, located at 207 Dale Adams Road in Sugar
Class for beginning contra dancers will begin at 7:30 p.m., and the dance will run from 8 to 11 p.m., with a waltz and covered dish treat break at 9 p.m.
Coming to Sugar Grove to perform for the dance will be the band, Spinning Wheel, from Asheville. Calling for the dance will be the ever-popular Dean Snipes from Charlotte.
Spinning Wheel is a high-energy contra dance band made up of two experienced dance musicians — Nic Coker on guitar and Karen Gaughan on keyboards.
The beginners’ workshop will consist of easy steps for new contra dancers of all ages. According to organizers, the goal is to teach the fundamentals of contra dance with a focus on having fun and placing less of an emphasis on dance techniques. All dances will be taught, just in time for the dance at 8 p.m.
It’s also the Boone Country Dancers’ Christmas dance, so attendees are encouraged to bring a covered dish treat to share during the break.
The Boone Country Dancers will provide warm cider and hot chocolate to accompany the treats, but attendees aren’t obligated to bring a dish.
According to organizers, “You can bring the whole family to the dance. Come as you are, wear soft flexible shoes for dancing. Come to dance; no partner is necessary.”
As always, Boone Country Dancers’ dances are smoke- and alcohol-free. Admission to the dance is $7 for adults, $5 for high school students and free for anyone 12 and younger.
