Collegium Musicum performs Oct. 26

The ensemble Collegium Musicum will perform works from the 16th to the 18th centuries Oct. 26 at Appalachian State University. The free performance begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall.
Ensemble members are tenor Johnny Harmon, soprano Caryn Crozier, mezzo soprano Paulina Villarreal, baroque flute and recorder player Cara Lewis, recorder player and harpsichordist Daniel Bukin, sackbut and recorder player Kai Weaver, trumpeter harpsichordist David Marvel and harpsichordist Elizabeth Salter. Alicia Chapman is the ensemble’s musical coach.
The program, considered a work in progress, will include excerpts from “Canzonetta” by Claudio Monteverdi, “I Must with Speed Amuse Her” and “Rejoice Greatly, O Daughter of Zion” by George Frideric Handel and “Mais, tous parle d’amour” by Michel P. de Monteclair
Collegium Musicum will perform the works in their entirety Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. Admission is free.

saxophone chamber music Oct. 28

Variety best describes the program for an Oct. 28 saxophone chamber music performance.
Students from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music will perform classical and contemporary compositions, including those by Dvorák, John Williams and Jack Marshall, at 4 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free, and the public is invited.
The program opens with “The Kid” by Edward “Kid” Ory, a jazz trombonist, bandleader and pioneer of the New Orleans jazz style. Other contemporary compositions include John Williams’ “Cantina Band,” “The Goldrush Suite” for saxophone quartet by Jack Marshall and “Hesitating Blues” by W.C. Handy.

Classical compositions include “Introduction et variations” by Gabriel Pierné and “Slavonic Dance, No. 8” by Antonín Dvorák.

Brass chamber ensembles perform Oct. 28

Brass chamber ensembles from the Hayes School of Music will perform Sunday, Oct. 28.
The free performance begins at 6 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall.
The program includes “Quartet for Tubas” by Frank Lynn Payne, “Winter Sunset” by Frank D. Cofield, “Air” from Handel’s “Water Music,” “Allegro and Air” from Henry Purcell’s “King Arthur” and “Scherzo” by John Cheetham.

Horn, trumpet, trombone and tuba/euphonium ensembles perform Nov. 5

A Nov. 5 recital features brass studio ensembles from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music.
The free performance begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall.
Performing are the Appalachian Horn Choir directed by Dr. Karen L. Robertson, Appalachian Trumpet Choir directed by Dr. James Stokes Jr., Appalachian Trombone Choir directed by Dr. Drew Leslie and the Appalachian Tuba/Euphonium Choir directed by Dr. Christopher Blaha.
The Appalachian Horn Choir will perform “Hansel und Gretel Phantasie” by Engelbert Humperdinck and “Salvation is Created” by Pavel Tchesnokov.
Selections by the Appalachian Trumpet choir include “Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury” by Benjamin Britten and “Festival Fanfare” by Nicholas J. Perrini.
The Appalachian Trombone Choir will perform “BoneWeek Fanfare VI” by Brad Edwards, “Let There Be Peace on Earth” arranged by Al Cobine and “Canzon Septimi Toni No. 2” by Giovanni Gabrieli.
The Appalachian Tuba/Euphonium Choir will perform “Appalachian Carol” by James Canter and “Second Suite in F” by Gustav Holst.
