The town of Boone continues the 2012 Concerts at the Jones House series with performances by Kirby, Welch and Stone and The Dashboard Hula Boys starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31.

Kirby, Welch and Stone will begin the evening at 5p.m. bringing their mix of original, traditional, and contemporary string-band numbers routed in the blues.

Featuring John Kirby on tenor guitar, Charles Welch on guitar and Rick Stone on mandolin, the group has been performing in the High Country for many years.

The veteran pickers first came together for their love of Mississippi John Hurt and quickly found a lot of common ground. “These guys are all excellent pickers, with exceptional good taste in music,” said concert organizer, Mark Freed. “They are longtime participants in the summer concerts at the Jones House for good reason.”

Dashboard Hula Boys will follow Kirby, Welch, and Stone, bringing their eclectic mix of acoustic string band sounds to the porch.

Including multi-instrumentalist Tom Whyte, guitarist Ed Midgett and bass player Nick Hurst, the Hula Boys have been playing as a group for a few years, but the individual members have been performing in the area much long.

Whyte and Midgett are part of the group The Lost Faculties.

The Hula Boys play favorites from old-time blues to classic rock, along with a few original songs.

“These guys are a ton of fun,” Freed said. “They bring great harmony singing, excellent musicianship and a super repertoire. People are going to love the Hula Boys.”

Concerts at the Jones House take place in downtown Boone at 604 W. King St. every Friday from June through September. The free concert starts at 5 p.m., and patrons are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to sit in the lawn.

The 2012 Concert series is sponsored by MPrints, Stickboy Bread and Melanie’s, Footsloggers, Mast General Store and the Downtown Boone Development Association.
