What if all you wanted for Christmas was enough to eat?

Circumstances often occur that can push people into a poverty situation. The fear and frustration of going from a comfortable life to one that requires a person to ask for assistance can be overwhelming.

The Hunger and Health Coalition has been helping those in need since 1982, but the situation worsens every year.

As such, the coalition’s annual “Christmas in the Mountains” fundraiser is back. Now in its seventh volume, “Christmas in the Mountains” is a collection of Christmas music, as performed by various local, regional and national musicians.

Copies cost $10 apiece, with proceeds benefiting the Hunger and Health Coalition, and are available in 55 locations throughout the High Country.

“This project is a joint effort of this community,” project coordinator Leslie Shavell said. “The performers and volunteers donate their time and music to produce a very professional CD of delightful Christmas music. Retailers give up their precious counter space to help sell the CD. And, most of all, the citizens of our community by the CD for themselves or for gifts to make this a very successful fundraiser.”

The project annually generates $25,000 for the Hunger and Health Coalition, Shavell said, noting that all proceeds remain in the High Country.

“What better present to give to a child than the gift of food?” said Compton Fortuna, executive director of the Hunger and Health Coalition. “It is unbearable to think of a child going hungry. One third of the people we feed are under 18 years of age. Many times, a family may choose to pay the electric bill to stay warm and cut down on food. Our mission is to provide food and medicine, as well as other services, to make life just a bit easier for these folks.”
