Wilkes Community College and MerleFest announce the 2009-10 recipients of the Chris Austin Memorial Scholarship - Ian Tucker Francis and Dustin Rubio-Serrano.

Francis, a sophomore enrolled in the WCC college transfer program, plays the guitar, mandolin and bass.

Rubio-Serrano, a freshman at WCC, plays piano, guitar and drums. Francis and Rubio-Serrano plan to attend Liberty University in the fall of 2010 and major in music. They're also active in a praise band at Celebration Baptist Church.

"It is great to know that the direction I am taking - pursing my education in music - is appreciated and recognized," Rubio-Serrano said. "I feel that my talents are not going to be wasted."

"Tucker and Dustin's passion in obtaining a career in music exemplifies what this contest and scholarship is all about," said Chris Austin Songwriting Contest coordinator Laurie Brintle Hayes. "We are very happy for Tucker and Dustin."

The Chris Austin Memorial Scholarship was established in 1993 by Trisha L. Austin Stanley. To date, 70 students have been honored as CAMS recipients, and more than $27,300 has been dispersed. Funds for the scholarship are raised through the annual Chris Austin Songwriting Contest held at MerleFest. For more information, contact Laurie Brintle Hayes at (336) 828-6158 or (
