Boss Hawg rocks to 2011
It's country. It's funky. And it's all High Country.
Meet Boss Hawg. If you're a local music lover, chances are you're already addicted.
"Boss Hawg has been around forever," front man Jon Jon Davis said. "We started the band in 2003."
And the gritty rockers haven't looked back since.
"Bluegrass and Americana genres, that's how I would consider us," he said.
Others have used phrases like "country funk" but, no matter how you slice it, they're a High Country tradition that won't quit.
"We just love to play music," Davis said. "We were given a gig by Myers Park Mortgage in Blowing Rock ... years ago, and that right there was how Boss Hawg came together."
At the gig, the crew was given name tags. A picture taken showed name tags "Boss" and "Hawg" together.
"And that's how we got our name," Davis said.
Under the BH tag, they've played all over the East Coast and beyond, to places like Austin, Texas. But, as many great things, it all started in Boone for Davis.
"I learned to play down the street from Doc Watson," he said. "Just being a part of the mountain culture and learning from my grandpa, he taught me how to play. He spent half of his life without electricity, so ... to play music was kind of our entertainment growing up. It definitely influenced me to learn at a young age and love country music."
Boss Hawg, made up of Jon Jon Davis, Kim France, Jeff Moretz, Brian Swenk, Mark Schimick and Brian Kreher, plays at Sugar Mountain Resort New Year's Day from 4 to 6 p.m. They'll give an encore Jan. 8 from 4 to 6 p.m., also at Sugar. Other Sugar shows include Jan. 22, Feb. 5., Feb. 19 and March 5. Shows are from 4 to 6 p.m.
