Boone Country Dancers hosts contra dance Jan. 18
The Boone Country Dancers will present a community contra dance
on Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Old Cove Creek School gymnasium.
Coming to Sugar Grove to perform for the dance will be the band, Boom Chuck, from Asheville. Calling for the dance will be Anne-Marie Walter, also from Asheville.
Boom Chuck is a high-energy contra dance band, comprised of three experienced dance musicians — Nic Coker on guitar, Laurie Fisher on fiddle and Rick Cooper on bass.
The evening will start with a beginners’ workshop from 7:30 to 8 p.m. The workshop will consist of easy steps for new contra dancers of all ages.
According to the Boone Country Dancers, “The goal is to teach the fundamentals of contra dance, with a focus on having fun and placing less of an emphasis on dance techniques.”
All dances will be taught. After the workshop, the regular dance starts at 8 p.m.
Dances are family-friendly, all are invited to come as they are, and partners aren’t necessary. Also, all dances are smoke- and alcohol-free.
Organizers ask that participants wear soft-soled shoes and bring a sweet treat or snack to share at the break. Boone Country Dancers will supply the hot cider and chocolate to accompany the treats.
Admission costs $7 for adults, $5 for high school students and is free for anyone 12 or younger.
The Old Cove Creek School is located at 207 Dale Adams Road in Sugar Grove. For more information, contact the Boone Country Dancers at (828) 406-0580 or boonecountrydancers.org.
