Summer concerts will get under way Friday night as the Appalachian Mountain Girls take the stage at the West Jefferson Backstreet Park.
From 5:30 to 7 p.m., the Appalachian Mountain Girls will present “true mountain music,” according to event organizers, specifically traditional, old-time and bluegrass. The group has performed throughout the High Country since its beginnings in 1994.
“We want everyone to come out and enjoy the show and bring a picnic or eat at one of our wonderful restaurants,” said Millie Barbee, past president of the West Jefferson Community Partnership.
Those planning to attend the concert shouldn’t be discouraged by rain or storms. Organizers said the event will be moved to the Ashe County Farmers’ Market, just down the street, if rain threatens the area. If wind, rain and thunderstorms hit, the concert will be held at the Ashe Arts Center.
If the concert is moved, signs will be posted at the original concert area informing attendees of the change.
Prior to the concert kick-off, a welcome will be given with announcements concerning the show and sponsors for the event.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our residents and our visitors to come out and enjoy traditional mountain music,” Barbee said. “This is a great family event, and it’s free.”
The event is the first in a series of concerts that are quickly becoming a known tradition in the county. The May 25 date is the first in the series that will run through the end of August.
The West Jefferson Community Partnership organizes the concerts, and each concert has a sponsor. The first free concert will be sponsored by the West Jefferson Business Association, which is made up of more than 40 members who own or manage businesses in West Jefferson. Their mission is to promote downtown West Jefferson.
