An Evening with Si Kahn
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Si Kahn will donate his time — and music — to a fundraiser for the Ashe County Arts Council.
The Ashe County Arts Council is sponsoring a special fundraiser
chili dinner and concert with singer-songwriter Si Kahn on Saturday, Jan. 19.
According to
organizers, “The evening promises the perfect meal for a wintry night, great music, lot of surprises
and an enjoyable way to raise funds for the arts council’s school and community arts
programming.”
Si Kahn is nationally known figure whose life as a musician, activist and
community organizer has spanned more than 45 years.
Noted for his original songs, Kahn is a
singer-songwriter who uses influences from traditional old-time music, folk music, the blues and
contemporary music to create songs of family, community, work and freedom. His songs have become
part of an oral tradition and are sung in folk clubs and living rooms, at rallies and on picket
lines around the world.
Kahn lives in Charlotte, but has a home just across the Ashe County
line in Wilkes County. He is a regular performer at MerleFest each year.
According to the
arts council, “Kahn visits Ashe County often and understands the value of community and the role
that the arts play in our lives. His music and life have been a testament to how the arts make a
difference.”
The theme for the Saturday night concert is chasing away the doldrums of
winter, “A Black Squirrel Winter.” Chili, tossed salad, crusty bread, dessert and beverages
will be on the winter-themed menu, and everything will be casual and served buffet-style. The food
is being cooked and donated by Ashe Arts Council volunteers.
Guests at the event will have
the opportunity to participate in special fundraiser events throughout the evening. For a
donation, one can dedicate a song to someone, commission Kahn to write a song, bid on having Kahn
visit one’s home for a personal concert, and more.
Participants can even buy a spoon to aid
in chili consumption.
According to organizers, “The evening will have lots of fun, silly
things planned that will keep everyone entertained.”
After dinner, Kahn will perform in
concert in the intimacy of the Ashe Art Center’s gallery.
Seating is limited to 70, reservations
are required, and the ticket price for the fundraiser is $35 per person. To make a reservation, or
